For more than 20 years, Koones has successfully used these tools to help dogs and their humans build strong, lasting relationships. By focusing on a dog's inherent drives during training and stressing the importance of good communication and socialization, Koones is able to teach dogs and share with humans the building blocks for a strong and healthy life with their pets.

Koones began his career in 1985 as a dog trainer's apprentice. It didn't take him long to realize dog training was a career he wanted to pursue professionally. He earned his degree at WV Canine College and completed coursework at Cornell University and the University of Guelph.

Koones believes successful dog training begins with thinking like a dog. "We need to approach dogs with an empty mind, one that is sensitive to who they are, not who we are." Koones understands and stresses the importance of thinking on a dog's level and not placing our emotions and thought processes on the dog. And so, Koones's training includes good old common sense and plenty of dog logic. By understanding where a dog comes from — not trying to change the dog's character, only to work with and improve it - Koones has helped countless dogs and humans achieve happy, harmonious lives together.

Good training and socialization are key to a successful, satisfied dog. A well-trained and well-socialized dog stresses less and is more confident - and is less likely to exhibit bad behavior. When you communicate well, your dog will know that his or her human is a reliable leader and someone he/she can count on. "If your dogs aren't listening to you," says Koones, "it's not because they don't hear you."
